CPL Teen LGBT Book List

Hey everyone. Chicago Public Library (CPL) just put out a list of books that are LGBT themed or have LGBT characters for TEENAGERS. There’s tons more for adults, and you just gotta research those on your own. Too much work for one person (ie me). Anyway here you go! I’ll include links to descriptions of the books (most likely amazon so you have reviews too.) I’ll put asterisks next to the ones I have read and enjoyed.

The Vast Fields of Ordinary by Nick Burd

Someday this Pain Will Be Useful to You by Peter Cameron

How Beautiful the Ordinary edited by Michael Cart (book full of short stories)

Down to the Bone by Mayra Lazara Dole

Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan *** this book is fantastic (I’m biased because John Green is my favorite author)

Last Exit to Normal by Michael Harmon * good, but deals more with the son’s reaction to his father’s sudden coming out rather than the main character being gay.

Freaks and Revelations by Davida Hurwin

Ash by Malinda Lo

Rage: a Love Story by Julie Ann Peters

Freak Show by James St. James (is this really this dude’s name?)

Another I really like is The Bermudez Triangle by Maureen Johnson which deals a lot with being a teenager and not being sure about sexuality (all the main characters are GIRLS which does not happen a lot because no one ever wants to talk about lesbians). I can also say that all of David Levithan’s books contain gay main characters (because I read them all, aside from the fact he’s gay too). One of my favorite authors of all TIME is David Sedaris and he’s gay but his books aren’t about being gay, they’re about being David Sedaris and being wonderfully hilarious. Add your own to this list, it’s a baby list!

-Rita

EDIT: Nick just posted this link on FB and I thought I might as well add it now http://www.leewind.org/ it’s got a bunch of books and you can search and it’s wonderful. so check it!

Vlog Brothers: Coming Out and Sperm Spikes

In which Hank talks about his personal struggles with his sexuality and confusing his gender identity with his sexual orientation…and he does it all using quantum mechanics as an analogy…but only after he tells John the most fascinating thing about traumatic insemination in bed bugs.

Guys, this is Hank, Hank is awesome.
